It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
It had been four months since Ella moved out of Ben's apartment. She was staying with her dad and even though she was okay with it, it didn't mean she was happy. Part of that was that she missed Haden. She'd been choosing the days when she didn't feel miserable about the breakup to contact Haden and the sporadic catch ups weren't nearly enough to make her miss him less.
But enough time had passed and Ella was ready to move on. She had spoken to her father a bit and with his assurance that what she wanted to do was the right thing for her, she took two weeks off from her lessons for a trip overseas.
The excitement she felt about being able to travel was nothing compared to seeing Haden on stage. She knew he was now in Italy and after making sure he knew nothing about her visit, she flew up and went to the hotel she booked which was near the theater Haden was working at and a day before his show, she called him and asked what he was doing.
"Things are so dull here, Hade. Wish you were here." She sighed into the phone as she walked up to the entrance of the theater.

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
The tour was four months in and with each day that went by, Haden found it harder to perform with everything that he had. He was dancing in Europe, he should have been happier. But he'd been away from his friends and the only family he had over the holidays which had made him damn near sick to his stomach. The fight, the terms they'd left on, Haden hadn't been able to shake it. Not to mention the fact that he heard from her a few times in a month rather than seeing her every day, he had considered leaving the tour every single day for the last month.
With a break in rehearsal, Haden headed to a corner of the studio to try and get his mindset right. Moments later, his phone rang and he felt relieved to hear his best friend's voice on the other line. He did all that he could to sound better than what he was, but it was hard when she wished that he was there because he did too. Haden smiled, "I'm sorry that I can't send some of my outstanding fun out your way. I wish I was there, too. I miss the hell outta you."
He chewed on the inside of his cheek, his eyes glancing around the studio at everyone else who was talking and laughing with each other. Haden could admit that if Ella had come with him, they would have been doing the same, but without her, his social personality took a backseat. "I'm just on break right now, observing the rest of the dancers. I'm telling you what Ells, I can see why he was looking for something new. They're all kind of dull and pretentious. Ain't got nothin' on us."
Home for me is where you are.

It's not unusual

Ella paused in the conversation, squeezing her eyes shut to breathe so she wouldn't just burst in excitement at being in the same breathing space as Haden right then. She walked through the doors and after pressing her phone against her chest once she found someone to ask them where the troupe was, she went back to the conversation, already hearing his voice saying exactly what he was saying on the phone.
She chuckled lightly and lowered her voice so he wouldn't catch on to her location. "You bet your ass. I can already imagine us dancing circles around them if I was there." She bit her lower lip before grabbing his hand from behind and squeezing it lightly.
"They really ain't got nothing on us, huh."

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
Haden smiled genuinely at her words, the first real smile he could say he'd done since before Ella told him no to coming to Europe. They would have danced circles around these snobs and they'd have had fun doing it while still looking damn near flawless. Things could have been so much different. So much better. He sighed into his phone and went to say something else before he felt someone grab his hand, "Wh-..."
His eyes widened at the sight of her and he couldn't get up fast enough. Once he was on his feet, he scooped her up in a hug, lifting her feet off the ground, "What are you doing here?!" Haden set her down and his hands went to her face, holding it so that he could really tell that she was there. He brushed her hair out of her face and wrapped his arms around her again. "I can't believe you're here. In Italy. How?" He couldn't shut up. The questions, the disbelief just kept pouring out of him. He squeezed her and buried his face against her shoulder.
He could have cried. Part of him wanted to. He wanted to breakdown right there in her arms, and frankly he wasn't sure what stopped him. Eventually he pulled back again, but took her hands because he refused to let go. Four months, two holidays, it was the worst time of his life. "I missed you to say the least," He laughed a little and leaned his forehead against hers.
Home for me is where you are.

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
Everything happened so fast and suddenly she was in his arms and her phone clattered to the floor. She squealed and laughed for Haden to put her down and just as he cupped her face, she wrapped her arms around his neck and breathed in relief, seeing him. She leaned into his touch, loving the feel of his fingers through her hair. Once again she was pulled into his arms and she squeezed him tight.
Ella wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her lips against the side of his head when he laid it against her shoulder. She closed her eyes and wished they could just stay in that position for awhile. Much like Haden, Ella also felt like she could just breakdown at any given moment. The back of her eyes had begun to prick, a sure sign of tearing up but as soon as it did, Haden pulled back and she sucked in a big breath and tacked on a huge smile on her face.
"I know, I just...I couldn't not see you perform, you know? I didn't want to miss it and I was due a holiday so I just cashed it all in."
She laughed when he told her he missed her and she nodded, ignoring the lump in her throat as their foreheads touched. "Same, Sinatra. Same." She released his hand and cupped his cheeks. "God, this face...how have you been?" She asked, dropping her hands back into his, gripping it tight. "You must tell me everything."

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
"You cashed it all in just to come see me dance?" He sighed and shook his head. Of course he'd have done the same thing if the roles had been reversed because they were best friends. Still, he couldn't fathom that she'd done it. Not with the way things had happened before. And all he could do was stare at her now that she was finally in front of him.
Her hands cupped his cheeks and he rolled his eyes at her words before laughing again. What was he supposed to say? That he'd been miserable right up until the moment that he'd seen her? That there wasn't a single day that he didn't regret taking this opportunity and leaving her behind? He never should have let her stay. And he never should have left her behind. There would always be more opportunities. He bit his lower lip and looked down briefly, "There's not much to tell, Ells."
He pulled her over to sit down with him and tried his hardest to ignore the looks that he was getting from other dancers. Haden knew what they were thinking, it wasn't hard for him to read the looks on their faces. Keeping a tight grip on her hands, he looked at her and shook his head again, "I still can't believe you're here. I mean...I didn't think I was going to see you for another few months."
Home for me is where you are.

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
The Australian dancer looked at her best friend with an incredulous look. "Haden, you aren't actually surprised, are you?" She laughed and tugged his hand down to slip her fingers through his. "Besides, it's a long time coming, I'd say." She nodded with a finality.
His response brought a crease in the middle of her forehead. He'd been in a dancing troupe touring Europe for four months and yet he had nothing to tell? She hadn't noticed a difference in Haden before on the phone but now that she was standing in front of him, she was beginning to see that he didn't actually look like the man she had let go four months ago.
She went down as he pulled her and she scooped her phone to pocket it before scooting close to him. Her previous worry melted when he started to speak again. "I know, which was why I couldn't stand to wait. And besides, how could I not watch at least one of your performances? You're my best friend, Haden." She smiled, squeezing his hand. "Have you been making friends?"

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
Haden smiled and shook his head, "I love you, kid." More and more every day, he found. It was hard to say those words without the actual meaning behind them that he wanted, but he had always loved her in some way. It had started out as family, although he had never seen her as a sister. And it had turned out to be much more than that.
Seeing the crease between her eyes, he brushed his fingers across it to smooth it down, "Don't. You don't have to worry about me." Although he knew that was much the same as her telling him he didn't have to worry about her. They were worry-warts and couldn't help it. He knew that much. Still he didn't like to see her fretting at him. He tapped her lower lip and smirked. "I'm good, Ells. Especially now."
Her question still made him hesitate. Had he made any friends? The term could be used for plenty of things. He hadn't made any friends, he'd made acquaintances, associates and one...sort of friend, but he wasn't all gun-ho about telling her of that one. Not yet. Haden squeezed her hand back and shrugged, "None worth mentioning. They're just people I work with, ya know?"

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
Ella wished her heart didn't flutter every time Haden said he loved her. Of course he loved her. As his sister, as his best friend, as his family. It couldn't be what she wanted it to be because Haden never saw her that way. Why would he?
She smiled back and lifted her shoulders. "I know."
As was habit, their worry over each other and the comfort that both immediately try to convey didn't really assuage the worry. But it did feel nice to have Haden's hand over her face. She leaned into the touch before rolling her eyes at him. "Yeah okay fine." She responded, but she did relax and smile at him, hoping he was telling the truth and not embellishing something that wasn't there.
She supposed her question had been a little self-serving, if she were being honest. She wanted to know whether Haden had attracted the females, which he often did. She wanted to know whether she had to compete with another woman for his company and affections. She knew it made her sound completely daft and desperate but Haden was her person. And hearing him pretty much shoot down the possibility that someone else had him made her sigh with relief.
"Not even your dancing partner? I mean the best dancers usually have at least some chemistry." She pressed, just to be sure. She knew she would have quit while she was ahead. Why did she like to torture herself like this? "How is she anyway? Your partner I mean."

I'm only happy when I'm with you
Her pressing made him shift uncomfortably. He kept hold of her hands and looked down at them for a moment to search for a suitable answer. As he looked up to answer her, he heard a familiar voice and he knew that his time had run out.
"Oh, mon deu! Hayes! Why're you just sitting here, we've got work to do! Rehearsal is going to start in twenty minutes and you're not warmed up....wait qu'est-ce que c'est?" Haden felt like dying as his eyes lifted to the blonde that was hovering above them. The French girl was his partner both on the dance floor and at night when he was lonely. She'd been filling a void, or he had been trying to fill the void with her while he was away. And he hadn't banked on his two worlds colliding so quickly.
The fact that she was bouncing between English and French had initially confused him, but now he was sort of used to it. "Blase, this is Ella. You know, the one I told you about from home?" He'd at least told one of them about the other. But it wasn't the one he was worried about. Haden stood up, pulling Ella up with him. "Ells, this is my dance partner. The other principal dancer." The one that had taken her place, but he didn't dare say it out loud.
"I'm also his la copine, or how you say girlfriend?" The girl pulled Haden's hand away from Ella's to place around her waist instead. "It's so nice to meet you."

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
The curse of knowing someone for so long, especially someone you have been in love with, there tends to be a hyper-awareness of their emotions and their tics. Haden just gave her a big sign of how he actually felt about this Blase person as she flounced over.
God, even her voice was annoying.
Ella had always been a fan of the French culture, especially the accent and the language but on this person, it just sounded grating. She just wanted the woman to shut up. The feeling overwhelmed her even more the moment she introduced herself as Haden's girlfriend. In that moment, she wished she wasn't standing up. Even before Blase pulled Haden's hand away, Ella had already let go.
If Haden were looking at her then, he would have seen all the color drain from her face and her eyes lose the sparkle it had just seconds before. She wished she could believe that maybe that look Haden had before meant that Blase was pushing herself on to Haden. That he didn't want anything to do with her. But she didn't. Because he could have pushed her away. He could have stopped her from calling herself his la copine.
"Nobody worth mentioning, huh." Her lips curled up into an amused but hollow smirk. She didn't realise that she had stepped away from them but suddenly the gap between them was miles away. "I'll see you tonight, yeah Sinatra? Break a leg. Or both." Ella said the last part under her breath as she turned to leave, waving over her shoulder in an attempt to make it seem like everything was fine.
